Our Dance Classes

Ballet

Ballet is the technical foundation of all dance styles, and we believe that it is an integral part of learning how to dance. Our Ballet classes follow the ATOD syllabus and contain traditional barre and centre work designed to create a strong and elegant dancer. Students will be introduced to the basic foundations of Ballet technique which build upon the fundamentals of dance movement.

Jazz

Jazz classes consist of traditional, Broadway style, and commercial Jazz. Our classes incorporate a blend of turns, jumps, technique, strength and style. They aim to build stamina, strength and flexibility but most of all, they are simply great fun!

Tap
45 min
Tap dancing is one of the oldest and most well-known genres of dance. Students develop a sense of timing and rhythm, as well as strength and stability in the upper body to contrast the speedy footwork.

Contemporary
45 min
Contemporary is a fusion of technique and raw movement, combined with Ballet styles and expressive flowing patterns. This style encourages self- expression, natural movement and personal interpretation and is always popular with students. Advanced Contemporary classes are by invitation only.

Pre School Dance
45 min
This class is for our preschool dancers and aims to encourage imagination, musicality and fun. It is designed to engage and develop a child’s love for dance. Structured classes develop expression, musicality and a dance foundation for easy transition into Junior classes. Students will learn Classical Ballet, Jazz and Tap styles. Students will have the opportunity to perform in our Annual Showcase and End of Year Display.

Ready Set Dance
A one hour combo class of JAZZ, TAP, HIP HOP, SINGING and MUSIC. Designed for both boys and girls, the program focuses on teaching the fundamentals of dance while developing confidence, coordination and creativity in a professional and safe environment. RSD is a unique preschool training program that is recognised Australia wide, it has been developed by early childhood development specialists and is a fun interactive program.

Hip Hop

Hip Hop is a street style of dance that has become increasingly popular over the last ten years. Classes are choreography-based and highly stylised to that of an international standard. Correct Hip Hop technique is taught within the choreography, with high emphasis on foundation grooves, movement, and connection to the music.

Acrobatics
Following the Acrobatic Arts syllabus, students start with fundamental skills of acrobatics and gradually progress to a variety of advanced skills, from cartwheels and forward rolls to aerials, walkovers and somersaults. Strength, body posture and flexibility are also included to ensure the body is capable of such skills.

Drama & Vocals
Our Drama & Vocals classes are a form of theatrical performance that combines singing, spoken dialogue, acting and dance. Students learn excerpts from famous musicals and singing techniques, as well as learning scripts and characterisation. The focus is to participate in our LPD Music Theatre productions. Students must select a dance genre such as: Ballet, Tap or Jazz to maximise the benefits of the program.

Jumps, Kicks & Turns
Our Jumps, Kicks & Turns classes are specifically designed to provide a grounding for other styles. Students will learn all types of variations of jumps kicks and turns to support jazz contemporary and lyrical genres. The class helps improve strength, flexibility and overall technique.

Conditioning

Strength & Conditioning is a workout class designed to help dancers increase their body strength, stamina and flexibility. Strength & Conditioning also teaches dancers about the mechanics of their body as it relates to dance technique.
Exams and Syllabus
Australian Teachers of Dance (ATOD)
Students may wish to progress their training by participating in our annual examinations.
Classical Ballet exams are held in April/May and October each year. Students take their exam at our Leongatha Studio. Each dancer receives a written report, providing impartial objective feedback, as well as a medal following the exam.
Ballet Conservatoire Vaganova
Classes for dedicated and disciplined dancers. This is by invitation only to advanced students, however, expressions of interest will be considered. Vaganova students, Classical exams are held at the Ballet Conservatoire, Melbourne, an outstandingly successful Russian based training program at LPD.
Acrobatic Arts
Students may wish to progress their training by participating in our annual examinations. Acrobatic exams are held in November each year at our Leongatha Studio. Each dancer receives a written report, providing impartial objective feedback.
